The following process is the recommended way to install Aster Tango Beta.  There are optional and mandatory pieces of the installation, however, your scenario may vary.  You must also have the ability to install tables into an Aster System if you are not going to use Aster Express.  You must also have the right to install software on your desktop such as the Aster ODBC drivers and dependent software.  You must also have the ability to create a Data Source Name in the ODBC administrator on your desktop.

BEFORE GETTING STARTED PLEASE READ ALL DOCUMENTATION SO YOU UNDERSTAND ASTER TANGO BETA:

READ ME FIRST:  Aster Tango Read Me First Instructions

TANGO BETA SOFTWARE ARCHITECTURE:  Aster Tango Software Architecture

INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS:  Aster Tango  Beta Installation

ASTER TANGO EULA: Aster Tango End User License Agreement

Recommended Software and Installation Guidelines:

  • Modern Microsoft Operating System
  • Microsoft Excel 2010 or compatible
  • Ability to create a DSN “Data Source Name”  in Windows
  • Need an Aster Tango Beta Repository.
  • Access to YouTube and the Internet to View Videos

Steps to Install Aster Tango Beta (Steps detailed below):

  • OPTIONAL STEP:  Get Aster Express and try Aster Tango Beta first.
  • STEP 1:  Install Aster ODBC Drivers and Required Software
  • STEP 2:  Build the Aster Tango Repository
  • STEP 3:  Create a DSN in Windows that connects to the repository in Step 2
  • STEP 4:  Get the Aster Tango Beta Software.
  • STEP 5:  Start using it.

OPTIONAL STEP:  Get Aster Express and try Aster Tango Beta first.

Installing on Aster Express will lower any risk to installing Aster Tango Beta on your organizations Aster environment.  You can also have your own Aster Tango Beta environment.  That way you can build your own code repository and also play around with the data in the repository without impacting others on your team.  You can also learn how to install Aster Tango Beta.  Practice makes perfect.

To download Aster Express click here:  ASTER EXPRESS.  You can watch a series of videos and get all recommended software for Aster Express too.  If you are new to Aster then this is a great place to learn more about the powerful capabilities of Aster.

STEP 1:  Install Aster ODBC Drivers and Required Software

To install the Aster ODBC Drivers you should read this document:  Aster Client Guide 6.20    This document contains all the necessary instructions for installing Aster ODBC Drivers.  I have included the two files that the installation manual recommends.  We always recommend you use the latest and greatest ODBC drivers.  Those driver can be found here:  Aster ODBC Drivers and Supporting Software.  The names of the two files you will need are:

  • vcredist_x64.exe
  • nClusterODBCInstaller_x64.msi   (64 Bit Excel)

  • Please use nClusterODBCInstaller_i386.msi  (32 Bit Excel)

STEP 2:  Install Aster Tango Beta Repository & Data files

If you are using Aster Express you can simply build the DDL by creating the table objects in the beehive database.  In your own environment you can create the repository in any database of your choosing.  Remember to grant rights to the objects to give proper permissions.  This is covered in the installation process below.

To install the Aster Tango Beta repository you will need to do the following:

1.  Learn about the Aster Tango Beta Repository by reading this: Aster Tango Beta Repository DDL Explanation.

2.  Click here to get the Repository DDL

3.  The repository is made up of 5 Aster Tables and they are easily installed.  See your system administrator if you need assistance.

For a general primer on how to build an Aster table watch this video:  Watch this video (Build your first table and load data)

4.  FTP the data files to your Aster environment and use the nCluster_Loader to Install.

To get the Aster Tango Repository Data Files please go here:  (Tango Repository Data Files)

Please unzip the files and load them into the tables using nCluster_Loader

You will have to replace your database in the –d call to your database and –U to your ID and –w to your password.

ncluster_loader -d (DB) -U (ID) -w (PWD) public.tango_analytic ta.txt

ncluster_loader -d (DB) -U (ID)-w (PWD) public.tango_statement tss.txt

ncluster_loader -d (DB) -U (ID)-w (PWD) public.tango_script ts.txt

ncluster_loader -d (DB) -U (ID)-w (PWD) public.tango_video tv.txt

ncluster_loader -d (DB) -U (ID)-w (PWD) public.tango_type tt.txt

STEP 3:  Create a DSN in Windows that connects to the repository in Step 2

1.  Make sure there is an Aster Tango repository.  See: STEP 2  Install Aster Tango Beta Repository & Data files

2.  Have the Queen IP Address, UserId, Pwd, and database name.

3.  Install the Aster ODBC drivers first.  You can follow the Aster Client Instructions.

4.  Open the ODBC Data Source Administrator

5.  Microsoft Windows >> Start >> Control Panel >> Administrative Tools >> ODBC Data Source Administrator

VERY IMPORTANT BASED ON EXCEL 32/64bit

NOTE:  If you are using Excel 32bit you will need to use a 32bit Aster ODBC Driver.  If you are using a 64bit Excel you will use an Aster 64bit ODBC Driver.

NOTE:  If you are using a 32 Bit Aster ODBC Driver you will need to use the 32 bit Driver ODBC administrator:

32 Bit ODBC Administrator is found here:  c:\windows\sysWOW64\odbcad32.exe

64 Bit ODBC Administrator is found here   c:\windows\system32\odbcad32.exe

Once in ODBC Data Source Administrator (Data Sources (ODBC) click Add... (See below)

Fill in the appropriate connectivity details in the Aster Database Login window.

If you are using Aster Express:

Data Source:  Any name you wish to use.  Please remember this for later.  You will use this to connect later.

Server/Port:  IP address of the queen and 2406 for the port number.

Database:  The Aster database where you installed your Repository.

Username and Password:  Use Aster credentials with appropriate access to the repository.

Click "Test Connection"
